With the implementation of a new curriculum, Common Core, my students will be required to think deeper than ever before. They will need to be fearless at trying to things and discovering new concepts. We have a long way to go in order to get there. My students are timid when asked to engage in discussions and are worried about tasks in which I give little guidance, because they are scared to make a mistake. I want my classroom and my school as a whole to be a safe haven where students and teachers explore together and support and guide each other both in our accomplishments and in our mistakes. I would like to see our school move from the rote memorization and drilled practice, toward interdisciplinary projects that tie math concepts to the world around us. I want math to become real to our students, not meaningless numbers on a worksheet! Unfortunately, my school does not have the funds to provide students access to much technology on a day to day basis.
