My students are not readers. They will loudly and proudly declare it. We are trying desperately to change the literacy culture in our school. With so many distractions (from sports, to technology, to early teen drama), literacy can be a hard sell. But we are prepared to take on the challenge; in fact, with the Common Core directives, we must. Employers need workers who can read and write well. My students lack definitive exposure to many work-related skills such as how to speak properly and appropriately, how to focus in on important information, how to debate or discuss various ideas until arriving at a solution, how to handle difficult people, and how to write effectively. Much of this problem stems from a lack of exposure to literacy. They have to VALUE it. Therein lies the problem...they do not. My school is seeking to increase the value of literacy with various activities. However, it would greatly help our program if we had high interest magazines.
