My students are from low socio-economic levels that struggle with Autism. We have 7 students in our classroom ranging from kindergarten to 2nd grade. Most have little or no verbal communication. We have one iPad for our Autism program (19 students) and it has helped students to make great strides in literacy and life skills. The iPad has several apps that allow students to communicate their answers to learning questions, and make choices. Being able to know that our students are able to prove that they have the understanding about subjects is invaluable. I watched a nonverbal student begin to read out loud by the end of the year using the iPad. It keeps the students engaged and is much cheaper than other communication devices. If I had two iPads for my classroom I would be able to improve the lives of my students, and as a teacher that is all I aim to do.
