My forty-eight fourth grade students are eager to learn and expand their knowledge for hands-on science activities. These students come from all backgrounds and races. Many of my students are not raised in a conventional two parent home. Some are being raised by a single parent, grandparent, and a few are living in a shelter. Their experiences are limited and school is often their only source of prior knowledge. Our school is a Title One school which means that at least 51% of our students are receiving free and/or reduced lunch. Children of poverty need to develop ways to activate their learning process and develop memory recall and hands-on activities and science experiments give them this advantage. Even though these students are faced with so many challenges in their lives, they come to school excited to learn and are enthusiastic in their discovery of what the world has in store for them.
