At Austin East Magnet High School, volleyball is a non-revenue sports. For that reason, the girls that choose to play this sport often do not receive the much needed equipment to be successful in the sport. With 92% of the students at AEMHS receiving free/reduced lunch, it is extremely difficult for families to give into the program in a way that will make a substantial difference to the girls success. Nevertheless, the girls have a heart for the sport and want to do push themselves to be the best that they can be. Most of the girls playing volleyball have decided to play because they want to stay out of trouble and give themselves some options for college. They have never participated in organized sports prior to joining the volleyball team and need to confidence to be competitive in our district.
