Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times I have allowed my students to choose where they would like to do their work. They are empowered when they are given choices in the classroom such as being able to choose where to sit as they work. However, there are not very many flexible seating options in my classroom other than the chairs at their desk and the carpet. If students are alert, motivated, comfortable and are making their own choices about their learning experience then they are at an optimal level to learn! With the stools and couch students will sit comfortably during their independent and partner work. With the surf tables they will be allowed to read and write wherever they feel comfortable.
