Our school is located in a suburban/rural community. Many of the students attending our school come from military families so our school population very transient. Our families are low and middle income. The county has one of the lowest income levels in our state. In the past three years our state has adopted the common core curriculum. As our staff has been working to make the changes necessary to be successful, the state has been making cuts to the education budget. I have been trying to teach the second grade standards with outdated materials not designed to address the common core. My colleagues and I decided to create our own units which are cross curricular and would delve more deeply into fewer focused topics. I have spent my own money to purchase class sets of books so second grade teachers can use them with their students. The units have been a success but the money to continue this project has run out.
