As first graders, my students love to move around the room, whether it be for reading, writing, or to play a math game. Last year, my school adopted the Reading Workshop program. One main component of this program is for students to practice their reading both independently and with a partner. I like to give my students the freedom to do their reading wherever they would like within the classroom. However, my students often complain that the floor is cold, hard, or dirty, which limits them to sitting at their desks. My classroom currently has one rug that is not big enough to fit all the students. This leaves some students sitting on the floor, while others sit in a chair close by the meeting area. The purchase of these materials will allow my students more opportunities to collaborate and get comfortable around the room. I would also like to transform my room through flexible seating, so the class set of carpet squares will allow each student their own space. I envision the carpets as a way for my students to be more engaged in activities because they can get comfortable and relax. I also believe these rugs will make my room more inviting to anyone that enters the classroom.
