My students are a true reflection of myself. Over twenty-years ago, it was my face sitting at that small wooden table. You see, I teach Kindergarten in the same community and district I grew up in. Not much has changed. Our dynamic staff does their best to mask the exterior flaws of our building, but the truth is, our foundation is severely cracked. We are located in the heart of Detroit and have been hit hard by the economic recession. My children, like my childhood self, fall below the poverty line. For the last two years, our staff has been operating with extremely low resources. Our building is void of curriculum and textbooks and our materials are self-created at the expense of the staff. We also don't have access to a copy machine or a laminator. It is getting difficult to pay for those basic necessities out of my pocket.
