I serve in a district where a majority of students are under-resourced learners; more than 80% qualify for free or reduced lunch because of their low socioeconomic status. Most of my 26 students started the school year reading significantly below grade-level. Their reading levels range from beginning kindergarten to second grade. Few of my students have books at home -- especially books that are "just right" (not too hard or too easy). Daily practice reading text at the appropriate level is crucial, but so is having access to different genres of books. My students need more experiences with nonfiction books so they can learn to navigate and understand informational text.
