Kindergarten is a year of incredible growth. My students come in from all different backgrounds. Some have gone to preschool or daycare while others have not yet had experiences outside of the home. Some students come in knowing letters and letter sounds, others are able to sing the ABCs. It is my goal that each of my students will leave Kindergarten as readers. This takes hours of work each day. We read to self, read with a partner and listen to reading in addition to our study of letters and words. Kindergartners need a boost in confidence that comes with success in reading. At the beginning of the year I hear, "I can't read" over and over on a daily basis. I need additional resources that will foster that success. The sight word readers that I am requesting are written using the sight words that are taught in class. When a child picks up a book they will instantly be able to read most, if not all of the words on the page. This will boost confidence and allow my students to read independently and with partners during their daily work. Having a variety of fiction and nonfiction readers will greatly impact the reading that is done in my classroom which helps lay the foundation for lifelong learners.
