I work in the inner city. Many of my students come to school having had no breakfast, some without even a coat. Half of my class consists of English Language Learners and Special Education students. The neighborhood is so dangerous, that the entire area is gated and security is always present. I tell my students every day that they should be proud of themselves because they are "present", not only in body, but in mind, and that the key to success in school and beyond is to become excellent readers, writers, and thinkers. The problem is that we do not have the materials they need to truly find that success. I want them to have more practice with skills that will prepare them for college and careers. They would benefit so much from literacy center opportunities. I have never encountered a group of students so eager to learn. We would greatly appreciate your support to accomplish our goals.
