My students are in a public high school completion program or are attending class to prepare for the GED test. Most come from dysfunctional homes/parents, and some live in shelters. Most have little confidence in their ability to learn. Many of the girls, although young, are also raising children. Some walk for over two hours to and from school because we do not offer a bus to our school. It is my job to help them realize that they are capable of a gratifying and nurturing learning experience. We are teaching lifelong learners to be tough and not be surprised by life's challenges after graduation. Many of them have moved from school to school over their entire school career. They come to us motivated to further their education and graduate. They are in school to better themselves although many of them have overcome more obstacles than most adults. They rival the students in other schools with their intelligence and ability.
