I teach 6th grade language arts in a low-income community. Many of my students live in single parent homes and many speak English as a second language. I teach the elements of tall tales using picture books as part of the curriculum. When I am done the students write their own tall tales and illustrate them. We have dictionaries in our classroom but I would like them to use more expressive language in their writing and this thesaurus by Roget is very user friendly and arranged in dictionary form. This will be very easy for them to use because when I teach the mechanics of using a dictionary they can use the same organization to use the thesaurus. Many of my students do not see reading and writing as pleasurable events, my hope is that this will not only expand their vocabulary but help expand their interest in creative writing in other subject areas.
