My students are precocious and inventive, interested and seemingly thirsty for content, but they are easily discouraged and overwhelmed. Our school district has high expectations that fosters growth and achievement. Given the rigor of the adopted Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, we are at a crossroads of questions. How do we provide the rigor of the curriculum and the remediation of the basic math concepts that are required to successfully attend to the new concepts in the scope and sequence of one school year without causing undo frustration and causing students to have negative ideas about school, learning, or worse, themselves?
