My students are of high school age, and have severe and multiple disabilities, including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, seizure disorders, visual impairments, deafblindness, congenital syndromes, and intellectual disabilities. They are mostly non-verbal and non-ambulatory, many have both physical and cognitive impairments, and are all at a preschool/kindergarten level cognitively. Our school is part of District 75, which includes all public schools in NYC exclusively for students with disabilities. My students who are non-verbal and semi-verbal use AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) devices, picture symbols, gestures, and vocalizations in school and at home in order to communicate with others. These methods help them to connect to and participate in the world around them, giving them a voice. My students are truly unique and wonderful.
