As an Airborne Ranger of 5 years and a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom I and II, I fully know the frustrations and challenges that can come with language barriers. I now teach 8th grade Algebra and Robotics in one of the most challenged urban public middle schools and communities in Southern California, and I again witness a language barrier - both within my own students, and with myself. Specifically, my students are 70% Latino and predominantly speak Spanish as their primary language both inside and outside of the classroom. The other 30% of my students are African American, and do not speak Spanish - yet many of them desire the opportunity to learn.
