Our students are all Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Their primary language is American Sign Language. Our school is a bilingual school where students use American Sign Language for instruction. Our students learn written English as a second language. Our students come from varied backgrounds that affect their language development, some from Deaf parents which allows them full access to American Sign Language but many are from hearing families who have little or no American Sign Language skills, leaving those student with limited access to American Sign Language. Our students may also have multiple disabilities which affect their ability to learn language fluently and quickly. Reading scores have been historically low for Deaf students but our school has been raising the bar. Providing more reading opportunities in the home will help to benefit our students.
