My 6th graders are a group of rambunctious students with varying abilities, interests, and experience. They are from the highest area of poverty within the district. Most of students are on free or reduced lunch. Books in the home are few or none. Our greatest area of underachievement is in literacy. If we can promote literacy in all content areas, our students will definitely excel in all other content areas as well. In spite of their reading deficiencies, our students are highly motivated and have a thirst for knowledge. With the implementation of content area books within each subject, we can increase literacy while increasing achievement for all our students.
