Our students range in age from 17 to 67 and most, if not all, come from a world where money and success are not easily obtained. These are students who were unable to make it through high school the first time. Many of our students believed they would never have another chance to earn a diploma. Many have not stepped foot in a classroom in over 20 years. Each term, I spend countless hours balancing math skills with building relationship and trust. I have learned that these two pieces are essential in a classroom. It is imperative that my students believe in me and what I am teaching. My students also need to be reminded each day that they are capable, smart, bright, and intelligent. Many have never heard encouraging words but are able, through our classrooms and this second chance, to build a sense of worth they never thought possible. Through math, they find out that they CAN solve problems and work through tough situations. They learn that they are capable of perseverance.
