The mentor texts that we are requesting have Black and Brown characters in them, that reflect the Black and Brown students that will be reading to and listening to the books. These books will help students learn about story elements: characters, setting, retelling. The books will also help the students learn about main idea and key details. All of this will be learned in a meaningful way because students will see themselves, their language, culture, and struggles reflected in the stories we are reading. The books will also help engage students to begin to think about critical issues of social justice that impact the way they live their lives on a daily basis. Some of the books highlight strong Black and Brown women such as Rosa Parks and Sonia Sotomayor, other books highlight Black and Brown struggles to desegregate the education system with stories of Sylvia Mendez and Ruby Bridges. The other texts touch on issues of gentrification, police brutality, immigration, etc. All of these texts will help my students learn standards-based content while opening up the platform for important conversations in our classroom.
