At my elementary school, students have extreme levels of reading experiences due to limited English speaking cultures, learning difficulties and socioeconomic backgrounds. Consequently, providing a balanced reading program that meets the needs of all my students is complicated. My first graders are a group of enthusiastic learners and with solid literacy skills, they can succeed at learning to read and be ready for any challenge in their, sometimes, unstable lives. As we are adopting the new Common Core Standards for reading, it is critical for students to develop a strong foundation in reading fluency and comprehension skills. Reading fluency is an indicator of future reading success, therefore, targeting reading fluency is our goal. To build this skill, students need rich literature at their reading level to not only increase their fluency rate but also gain reading confidence.
