Working with youth is at times challenging, however at the residential treatment facility in which I work, I am helping at-risk students bring science to life. In our "out of the box" classroom, we work with everything from a 300 gallon aquarium with indigenous fish species to boas and pythons. Instruction reflects the replication of various ecosystems, conservation management, taxonomy, and care of a diverse population of animals. This educational setting offers these students an opportunity to view education, specifically science, through a vocational standpoint. My goal is to give students a positive outlook on learning and education while inspiring them to evaluate future career paths in science whether it is in a college or vocational setting. All of my students have grown up surviving abuse/neglect; and, nearly half of my students are classified as special education and struggle academically.
