My 8th graders are special because they put up with my demands. They are eager to learn and possess great qualities of curiosity, honesty, creativity, and open-mindedness. In that sense, they are natural-born scientists. It is my job to make them comfortable with that fact. I teach in a rural area in Florida. The student population meets Title I requirements, which means the majority of our families qualify to receive free and/or reduced price lunch. While some may view that as a setback, my students view their education as an opportunity. My students come to me from a broad cross-section of science instruction at the elementary school level. However, our school administrators are fully supportive of making science fun and accessible to our students, who may otherwise not have the opportunity to experience the rich opportunities afforded them while at school.
