My students are 80% in poverty. They come primarily from single family working mothers. They live on the edge of our ever growing capital city boundaries but many have never left the city. They are innocents in many ways, having never experienced the simple pleasures most kids have like carving pumpkins or making gingerbread houses. They hide this innocence under the tough veneer of hard faces as life has taught them to in order to survive. They are desperate for acceptance and desire to do well but lack the support they need.
