The materials I'm requesting will go towards building a sensory corner in our classroom. For most people, our sensory-motor needs are met through our day-to-day activities. For the majority of students in my class, they need either additional or more varied sensory stimulation in order to stay engaged, happy, and safe as learners. This corner will allow them to engage in sensory experiences that are fun, comforting, and teach them to manage their needs. Your donation for this project will directly support the academic, physical, and emotional growth of my students. Students with appropriate access to sensory input are more expressive, focused, and healthier! Most of these items will directly develop students' sense of proprioception (body awareness, usually experienced through fine and gross motor tasks or tactile input). Some items (the bean bag refills, Big Joe bean bag, poly-pellets, and fleece blankets) will be used enhance students' sense of space surrounding the body. Other items build and engage small motor proprioception with muscle building tasks (Fidget bundle, Theraputty, Foam, mechanical pencils/refills, and Fidgeteez Bands) or through soothing, touchable input (area rug, pillow inserts, pillow shams). One of the most important aspects of a sensory corner is for students to be able to block out bright lights and sounds (like those common in a classroom!) To help students do this, I'm requesting a set of headphones, multiple sheer curtains, and soft twinkle lights. Finally, I'm requesting a few items to organize this space. The shelf will be a home for the foam, putty, and fidgets. The Command hooks will hold the headphones up, hold the curtains back when not in use, and support the fishing line, which the curtains will be hung from. The sand timers will allow students to manage their time in the corner--and get back to learning!
