With recess now limited to once a day for 15 minutes, PE not being provided daily, and both being halted during testing dates and bad weather, our students are not getting the needed opportunities to strengthen their gross motor skills. In addition, many of my students live in neighborhoods where it is simply not safe to play outside. Studies show that successful reading and writing depends on a well-developed ability to smoothly perform actions using both sides of the body simultaneously. Students need the ability to use one hand to control the pencil and another hand to position and stabilize the page for writing. They also need to train the eyes to follow print horizontally across the paper and vertically down the page for reading. These skills come from the stages of bilateral integration my students will build using the products I am requesting for this project. Muscles gain strength through repeated activity and practice. This equipment will provide opportunities for climbing and jumping (Hiltops climbers, mini trampoline), crawling (tunnel, cone set with bars), balancing (step logs, balance balls) and coordination (parachute, riverstones.) These products will strengthen my students' balance, coordination, and visual discrimination. Providing these opportunities will vastly improve their readiness levels to perform the required milestones of learning to read and write.
