Critical thinking and analysis are difficult skills to teach without literature that facilitates empathetic development in students. Students need to see faces like theirs in the literature they read so we can reach both academic and SEL goals we have for the school year. The Hate U Give is a book that tackles social, political, and emotional issues that are relevant and important to my students. This is the type of story that will engage students personally, culturally, and critically. Access to education, social alienation, and gun violence are all things that my students are passionate about changing. Through this unit of study, students will not only engage with the novel but also develop a service-learning initiative that will connect their novel study to their community. Service learning like this has been seen as the future of education, and I can't think of a better way to get students engaged with an issue than to provide them with a character in a novel like them fighting for the same cause.
