Many of my students come from high poverty and many different ethnic backgrounds. Our school is incredibly diverse and transient. We have a large population of English as a second language learners. As a school community, we are working hard to build a strong connection between our families and our school. As a staff, we have focused on using best practice to reach all of our students, especially those learning English. We know that learning to read at grade level is the most important indicator of academic success. Often our parents don't feel like they can help their child complete homework assignments and this has required our students to become more independent at an earlier age. They often struggle getting their homework done.
