The students in our K-6 suburban school represent numerous cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. My third graders love to play learning games, read, explore on the computer, and play sports. They have had to be flexible and patient this year, since I was out on medical leave the first three months, and have only known them for a month now. As their personalities emerge, I see students who love to be social and discuss things with their peers. They enjoy standing in front of the class to explain solutions to math problems or to share their journal entries. The most important thing about my class this year is how helpful they are. Our school-wide character education program is really reinforcing and recognizing how essential it is to be a person of good character. These traits translate into a much better learning environment--a place where kids take pride in themselves and want to help others.
