I teach 30 students, 60% are general education learners and 40% are special education students with learning disabilities. Some are struggling to read on grade level but truly have a passion for learning and want to better themselves. They are dedicated kids who deserve the things in their class that the wealthy school districts and wealthy parents hand out. My school is in a low income area and most students do not have a lot of money for school supplies, let alone extras. Their non-English speaking families struggle to make ends meet and try their best to help their children. However, the language barrier and long work hours do not allow it. Many of my students don't want the weekend or the summer to come, because then they are stuck at work with their parents or home alone. I've had students whose parents struggle with substance abuse and their home life is worse than I could ever imagine. Everyday though, they have smiles on their faces as they are welcomed into my classroom.
