These first graders are tough Alaskan Kids. Our school is in Valdez, Alaska. This is the city which has the largest snowfall in the world! We can receive as much as 400+ inches of snow a year. A favorite quote of mine from a student is, "Mrs. G, it's like we live in a snow-globe!" We all love our small community and play outside as much as we can. However, our extreme weather can keep us indoors for many days at a time. This in turn can lead to the students experiencing the, 'winter blues.' The winter days are very short and we go to school in the dark, and return home after school in the dark. There are days when we do not see day light. This has an affect on the students. Light makes us happy, energetic, and awake! My first graders are enthusiastic to learn and there is no better way to learn then when the brain is awake and alert.
