I teach in a bilingual elementary school setting where 60% of the day is taught in English and 40% is taught in Spanish. My school's population is comprised of 90% Hispanic students. I teach fifth grade Math, Spanish and Social Studies and my partner teaches 5th grade Reading, Language Arts and Science. I teach Spanish and Social Studies in Spanish and Math in English. I switch groups with my partner mid-day so I teach two groups a day. For my ESOL group, I use ESOL strategies to help them understand the math since most of them came to this country and short time ago. Our school setting is unique in that most of our students are fully bilingual in English and Spanish by the time they leave to middle school. My students are eager to learn and enjoy learning from a variety of different resources not only paper and pencil activities.
