Middle school is often a crucial turning point for students in their reading behavior -- students either gain an interest in reading to propel their skills forward, or students become frustrated with higher-level texts and begin to view reading as an impossible task. In our class, we provide students with a teacher-purchased classroom library to give them opportunities to be exposed to a variety of books and magazines for independent reading. Adding more graphic novels to our classroom library will provide struggling readers with high-interest texts to build essential reading skills and encourage a love of reading. Graphic novels give students access to texts they might not normally read; more importantly, they give students an opportunity to practice important reading strategies and metacognitive skills with texts that are more appealing. Beyond classroom skills, providing students with inviting texts guides them toward lifelong reading. It can be challenging for students to see reading as an enjoyable hobby. Giving students accessible texts to read that develop their imagination, inquisition, and creativity is one of the best methods for improving students' positive outlook of reading.
