The students in my classes are diverse in many ways: race, cultural background, economic situation, learning ability and other ways. About half of most of my classes are ELL and even they are Hispanic, South Pacific Islanders, and Asian. At least 50% of my students are living in single parent situations, with minimal supervision. Our high school is one of the largest in Hawaii and buses students from as far as 30 miles. We are located on an island away from the state capital and from our county seat and a branch of the university. We are surrounded by Native Hawaiian housing and have a large free-and-reduced lunch population. We live in a rural town with very few community and academic resources available for our teachers and our students. Many of our students have not been off the island and do not envision that an academic education would enhance their futures.
