I work in a public elementary school in a area plagued with high poverty and unemployment in North of Houston. My students, coming from a school district that was shut down by the state for the unjust education, have faced many obstacles the average 50 year old has never faced. They come to school to learn despite the lack of stability at home. They are eager mathematicians and soaring scientists. They come from immigrant homes, 100% high risk, where the parents often works two jobs just to make sure that the children have the basic needs for school. My students have a desire to learn and grow. They want to be good role models for their younger siblings. They work hard each day and they come to school with a positive attitude. I want to make sure that my students have the same opportunities to learn as their peers who are not facing the same obstacles.
