I teach around 750 students in grades K-5 once a week. My students live in a high poverty area and come from many different backgrounds. Many have trouble speaking English, particularly in Kindergarten and 1st grade. Playing on instruments allows students to expressive themselves without the pressure to speak in a foreign language. When I bring out instruments of any type, my students get so excited because they realize how much fun they will be having that day.
