The students in my class are expected and required by the district to use digital resources in their everyday routine. My classroom is equipped with four computers with software dating back to 2011. The students spend precious minutes gazing at the blank screen as they wait for content to be loaded. I also have access to two Think Pads! It is frustrating to watch children who are so eager to learn, fight over limited resources. Survival of the fittest should not be the theme of the day as students fight to get to the only computers that might get them started on their work. Having additional laptops in my classroom would enable me to empower my students to build on the skills they will need in order to succeed in middle and high school. With the additional laptops, the children will be able to build on their research skills. They will have online access to a wealth of reading materials, which will help them build their vocabulary and comprehension skills. With my teacher center desktop, we have managed to Skype our way into classrooms in other continents. In today's world, multiple opportunities to engage in technolgy in a meaningful manner will allow my children to gain more valuable information about the world we live in. As we read about the world of penguins, children can use their laptops to research the impact global warming has had on their environment.
