I am a kindergarten teacher at an elementary school in Southeast Louisiana. Our school is located in a high poverty community and 90% of our students receive free lunch. Currently there are 21 students in my class. There are eleven African Americans, two Hispanics, five Caucasians, one Native American and two bi-racial students. Many of these students live in single-parent households with high poverty rates. Often, single parent households lack the educational ability to provide academic assistance to children. Most of my students are not offered the opportunity to use and understand technology at home because they lack access to technology. In addition, money for technology at our school is limited and has been spent for this school year. I believe my students can expand their knowledge and use of technology to enhance their learning in the classroom. Without the integration of technology my student will not be able to compete in the global society.
