My students attend 3rd grade at an inner city school in a low socio-economic area of Anaheim, California. Our school is a low performing school and our students come to school with little, other than the desire to learn and be successful. My class is the Gifted and Talented Education class who have studied hard to master standards and have scored well on our state test. Our textbooks are filled with fictional stories that they love to read, but they especially devour non-fiction text. Scholastic News offers a magazine written with high interest text and topics that the students thoroughly enjoy. The magazine is aligned with state standards and assist my students in analyzing factual information. Animal, bugs, and history are all huge areas of interest to these 3rd graders and they gain knowledge of these topics in a handy magazine. The best part is that the students get to take these magazines home after we have used them in class so they have reading material of their own.
