I teach at a high poverty school where over 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. I am the English Language Development teacher and serve about 18% of the students at our building. Most of the parents of these students have only an elementary school level of education and are therefore are not able to assist their children with homework assignments. They do not have the same level of technology (computers, iPads) in their homes as do students from more middle-class families. Despite these circumstances, the students are hard working and wish to improve their academic skills. They deserve to have the same opportunities to advance in learning as students from more affluent homes.
