My school is an ever-expanding and improving school for students wanting to pursue careers in engineering, mechanics, and the like. Being mostly composed of boys of black and Hispanic races, this school is truly unique. Students come from every corner of New York just to attend - some having to make a two-hour commute by public transportation every morning. The staff is amazing, incredibly and selflessly dedicated. Three years ago, I began a jazz band. We started simple- learning blues changes, beginning to improvise, studying the Coltrane and Miles and Ella... And after a great deal of hard work and several stellar performances, the jazz band has become the most advanced instrumental offering at our school! Last year, we attended our first NYSSMA festival. In addition, we perform at multiple school and community events and send many of our budding instrumentalists to summer programs. Enrollment in jazz band has more than doubled since its inception.
