I currently teach 8th grade ELA at a Title 1 public middle school in the Bronx. Unfortunately, most of the students in my classroom are struggling readers and read way below grade level. Our demographics include; 20 percent of my students are English Language Learners, 17 percent have special needs, and 91 percent of my students are eligible for free lunches. Due to the diversity in our classroom, high interest and series books are incredibly important in helping the students advance their reading levels and prepare themselves for high school. The neighborhood is a book desert. Due to their academic struggles, reading is a difficult task for them, so having books they can enjoy is incredibly important for their success. My students have high aspirations and goals. They are a personable bunch with strong opinions and views.
