My kids are K-5. They are craving knowledge and affection. Most come in with their arms wide open for a hug. They are so grateful to borrow a book even if it is worn and taped. But they deserve the same fresh, new, fun print materials that better funded libraries offer. Our school is urban, old and at the bottom of the list for a library budget. Most of the newer resources have been purchased by myself. In our district, there are some new schools that have been built over the past few years in addition to magnet schools and they have state of the art media centers with brand new materials. I walk into them and wish my students could enjoy the same atmosphere. But I tell them every day that even though our library is small and old, we accomplish more learning than most of those brand new schools because we try ten times harder with the materials we have.
