My students are stars...that's what I tell them everyday. They attend a neighborhood school in Chicago in a low-income, high crime area of the city. There is a high unemployment rate, and many of my students struggle with the very real fears of having their basic needs provided for. Sadly, education is not always valued to the extent it should be, as many of their parents dropped out of school and may even experience illiteracy themselves. Amidst this difficult environment, you find this amazing group of joyful, loving first graders. They are diamonds in the rough, and hold so much potential to be agents of change in their families and community. Inspiring in them a love for learning is something we strive to do every single day. My first graders have the potential to be first-generation college students some day, and it begins right here, in this moment, this very day.
