I work in a fantastic middle school in Colorado where students are eager to explore the world around them. However, though their minds are hungry to grow, the tools available to them are limited. Over 80% of the school's population is on Free and Reduced Lunch, which also reflects the availability of resources like computers and Internet access in their homes. Many students look forward to coming to school to get a chance to use a computer. But, the classroom sizes in the building are growing rapidly, some classes are reaching almost 40 students per teacher per class. This makes resources in the school less and less available when there aren't enough desks or computers to satisfy the needs of a class. Another important note about my students is that the data I've collected through multiple types of standardized tests, as well as data collected by my own assessment, reveals that half of my 7th-graders are at a 4th-grade math level or below.
