At the beginning of the year, almost all new kindergarteners will proudly declare, with the unwavering confidence that only 5 year olds can muster, that THIS will be the year they read a book- a First Grade Book! Does it matter that they can only read 5 words in August? Not in the slightest. My kindergarteners specialize in dreaming big. They are not burdened by the fact that they are already 1 1/2 to 2 years behind their peers in more affluent school districts. They have no concept of the fact that 95% of them receive free and reduced price lunch at a charter school that serves predominantly low income children. They also have no idea that by not having books at home, they are already climbing a very steep mountain to reach their goal. As their teacher, I am not worried about any of these challenges, because I know that when it comes to kindergarteners, where there's a will, there's a way, and they WILL read a book by the end of the year.
