Our fabulous students are learning English as a second language. Some of them have moved to the United States as recently a month ago! They work so hard each and every day to acquire vocabulary. They practice their vocabulary words by speaking to those around them, both in social conversation and in academic settings. Our students who have lived in the United States a little bit longer have a very difficult time learning the conventions of English grammar. Their content area vocabulary is lower than their non-ESL peers. Their writing and reading comprehension is lower than their non-ESL peers as well. They are working VERY hard to keep up. Teachers are spending countless hours modifying assignments and helping students with language.
