Manipulative materials are a daily, vital component to structured literacy. Structured literacy is a method of teaching reading in a very explicit way, which is important for ALL children, including those with learning disabilities, such as dyslexia. Students use the letter boards with color coded magnetic letters to learn, sound, and build words. They use the pre printed dry erase boards to learn correct letter formation, spell words, and write sentences. These materials are highly engaging for students. I've been using a class set with classes I support, and with the small groups of students. Now, our 1st grade teachers have access to the Wilson curriculum, but unfortunately, they do not have these materials, which are a central part of the curriculum.
