My school is in Central Harlem. We received a "B" on our 2013 progress report in the 38th percentile rank. We serve around 300 students, 25% with disabilities, 10% are English-language learners. 98% are black or Hispanic. 64% of students graduate in four years, 75% in six years. This year our students scored an average score of 62 on the English Regents (not passing)! Only 46% passed the English Regents which is a required test to graduate high school in New York. Beyond this statistic, only 23% received a "college-ready" score on the English Regents. Average SAT score for Critical Reading is 379 (5.3% College-Ready), average ACT score for English is 13 (3.9% College-Ready). My students cringe when they have to read text for a sustained period of time.
